Many thanks to everyone who contributed to our pen appeal. We now have new pens at two of our fosterers. An old
pen will have to be replaced at another fosterer’s, and so it goes on. There is always something needed to help the
cats who need our care. That’s why we are so grateful to all our members who support us with subscriptions,
donations and attendance at events, and to our volunteers without whom we would be unable to continue.
We don’t like to talk about what will happen when we die but sometimes it can help peace of mind if you
know that arrangements can be made for your cat. Cats Protection has produced an info pack about how
you can tell your family and friends that you would like your cat to be taken into care, and also how you
can leave a legacy to help with the cat work. However large or small, a gift in your will is always put to good use,
and you can specify that you would like the money to come to the Southend & District Branch. If you would like a
pack, please call Mary on 01702 584079. Our legacy department at the National Cat Centre will always be pleased
to answer any questions you may have; call them on:
01825 741 271 or look online at: www.cats.org.uk/supportus/legacy.asp where there is a lot of information.
Please keep sending material for inclusion in the newsletter. Any cat related items - anecdotes, poems, cartoons
will be very welcome.
Deadline for contributions to the next edition is 15th September.
This What a glorious few weeks we’ve had with the weather and such a welcome change!
There is nothing quite like looking out into the garden on a beautiful sunny day and seeing a lot
of very relaxed and contented moggies sprawled out in various aspects of the garden.
Kitten season is here, although I’m happy to report not with a vengeance! Actually when we
have kittens arriving in controllable numbers, they are very enjoyable. ‘Aaaaaah!’ Sorry, I just
love the little critters. I hope I’m not tempting fate here and suddenly we’ll have a deluge of them to deal with!
We have had three Homing Days this year and an Open Day at the cattery we now use. We have done very well
with the actual homing of cats at all of these with the exception of the last one a couple of weeks ago, a
disappointing five cats were homed on the day. Which was good for those five cats but we hoped for more homes.
Our next one is at the cattery on 18th July(see page one), but then not until September so summer holidays will be
at an end and perhaps more people may consider taking a little feline into their home.
The branch is always busy on the fundraising front and the first half of the year has been really busy. We’ve had
jumble sales, a bring-and-buy sale, quiz night, an auction, bazaars, plant sale and other things I probably can’t think
of! And the atmosphere at the events is always pleasant and cheerful (even though the team have been working
their socks off to get everything in place).
Have an enjoyable and safe summer everyone! Oh can I just remind anyone who has a cat with white ears, white
nose, or both to apply high factor sun protection on sunny days.
Take care until next time

names will be added to the list in the next Newsletter. Please know that we are very grateful to everyone who
donates, we could not survive without your kind help.
Cats homed: April 2009 : 6. May 2009 : 23. June 2009 : 13.
Total in care : 30 (cats & kittens).
Total homed 2009 to date : 127.
Compared to our March Homing Day, the one in Shoebury on 6th June was a disaster. Only five cats found homes,
the other 12 had to return to their fosterer or to the cattery. This means we cannot take any more cats in until we
rehome some, and there are several deserving cases on the waiting list. If you can take in a cat, either permanently
to adopt, or short term to foster, then please get in touch with me. All our cats over six months old are neutered,
vaccinated and microchipped, as well as having the usual flea/worm treatment.
Our next Homing Day is in Southend on 19th September but we will hold a special display of the cats who are being
looked after for us at Shalynn Cattery on 18th July. The Cattery is at 569 Prince Avenue (A127), Westcliff, but rather
than turn off the A127, it is easier to find if you enter from the A1158 at the end of Southbourne Grove. Shalynn
Cattery sell lots of cat accessories such as beds, scratching posts, litter, litter trays and food. You will be able to
meet/stroke the cats and, subject to the usual home visit, adopt a cat almost immediately.
Our campaign to help owners financially towards neutering costs is still running. If you know anyone who has an
unneutered cat over six months old, and lives in our area: postcodes SS0, SS1, SS2, SS3, SS4, SS9, please tell
them about the help we can give. All they have to do is telephone me. Vouchers are worth £20 for male cats and
£26 for females, and can be used at a vet of their choice.
Finally, have a look at the Homes Needed column – can you help? If you are interested in adopting or fostering a
cat or kitten and want more information then give me a ring.
My telephone number is: 01702 467001, please leave a message if the answerphone is on. I’m
usually in after 6 pm and I will get back to you; or email ritarob@hotmail.co.uk.

We have been fortunate to have made a good profit at the Auction and the Quiz Night, both of which were most
enjoyable. The Plant Sale & Bazaar did very well too; we noticed sales of vegetable plants had increased greatly,
probably due to the current trend for ‘growing your own’.
We have our fingers crossed for good weather on 12th July for the Garden Party at Beauchamps. Do join us if you
can - there will be the usual stalls plus some fun and games, in a beautiful setting. Another ‘must’ is the Coffee
Morning at Porters courtesy of the Mayor of Southend. Even if the weather is less than kind there will be yummy
refreshments and good company plus CP goods, a raffle and a huge tombola. The jumble sale and a further
auction planned for September and October respectively will give you a chance not only to donate some unwanted
items but also to come along and grab a bargain. We still need more tinned and packet food (in date) for the food
tombola; please give any donations to Florrie or bring them along to one of the events.
